Why Your Brows and Lashes Might Be Thinning If You're on Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro

A handful of clients have raised this in the chair over the past few months. Their brows look thinner than usual. Some notice gaps along the lash line too. Nearly every time, the timeline lines up with when they started Ozempic, Wegovy, or Mounjaro. The shift is real, it's documented, and it isn't something they did wrong.
What's happening to your hair follicles
Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro slow digestion and cut appetite, which usually means fast, significant weight loss. Speed is the trigger. Rapid weight loss puts the body under real physical stress, and hair follicles respond to stress by shifting early into their resting phase. Dermatologists call this telogen effluvium. It shows up as diffuse shedding rather than bald patches, and it typically starts six to twelve weeks after a dose increase or a stretch of fast weight loss, not right away.
A 2026 review out of UCSF and Kaiser Permanente looked at more than 130 studies on GLP-1 medications and hair loss. People taking these drugs were 3.4 times more likely to report hair shedding than people who weren't. Tirzepatide, the active ingredient in Mounjaro, showed the highest rate, near 6 percent among people on the highest dose.
Why brows and lashes show it first
Scalp hair grows on a two to four year cycle. Brow and lash hair follows a shorter one, closer to four months for brows and four to six weeks for lashes. A shorter cycle means faster turnover, and faster turnover means shedding shows up sooner and looks more dramatic in a smaller area. Brows hold far fewer hairs than a scalp, so losing even ten percent of them shows in a way ten percent scalp loss usually doesn't yet.
Signs it's the medication, not over-tweezing
- Thinning spreads evenly across the brow, not concentrated where you tweeze or wax most.
- It started two to three months after you began the medication or after a dose increase, not right after an appointment with us.
- Your lash line looks sparser too, with no change to your lash routine.
- New brow hairs come in finer or lighter in color.
The one rule, don't change your medication over your brows
This is cosmetic guidance, not medical advice, and we want to be direct about the line. If you're losing hair on a GLP-1 medication, the shedding is almost always temporary. Research on this specific side effect points to full regrowth within three to six months once weight stabilizes, with no evidence of permanent follicle damage. Talk to the doctor who prescribed your medication before changing your dose or stopping it over a cosmetic side effect. We help with how your brows look in the meantime. We don't weigh in on your treatment plan.
What helps while your follicles recover
The shedding traces back to nutrition more often than to the drug itself. Rapid calorie reduction leaves many people short on protein, iron, zinc, and vitamin D, all needed to keep hair follicles in their growth phase. Ask your doctor about checking those levels if you haven't already. Eating enough protein at each meal, even in smaller portions, gives your follicles something to work with. Skip the urge to wax or tweeze aggressively while you're shedding. Thinner brows show more when you take away what's still there.
Where microblading fits in
Microblading and ombre shading don't stop the shedding and don't speed up your recovery. What they do is give you a full, defined brow shape now, while your natural hair cycles back in over the next few months. We design around your existing hair rather than replacing it, so as new growth returns, it fills in alongside strokes or shading already doing the work. For lashes, there isn't a permanent fix on our menu. The most reliable path there is the same one as your brows: time, nutrition, and your doctor's guidance.
This post is general cosmetic education, not medical advice. It isn't a diagnosis of your hair loss and it isn't guidance on your medication. Talk to the doctor who prescribed your GLP-1 medication about any hair, brow, or lash changes you notice.
